I would like to share with you a story that happened before our plane left Japan soil. I was supposed to sit at 42E, and when I reached my destination, a man (who was fairly overweight) was already seated at 42D. A mental alarm went off in my head because he was occupying 1 and 3/4 of both our seats! I thought, "This is going to be a looong flight.". The Filipina who was seated on my other side was urging me to complain to the attendants (because we pulled up the arm rest just so I could fit -- siya rin na-hassle). I thought over my principles because I am not a fan of humiliating other people for my sake. But this time, without sleep and proper food intake, I could not bear an uncomfortable 12-hour flight. So, I went over to a Pinoy-looking attendant and voiced out my concern. The plane was super duper full, so they couldn't find a seat to transfer me to. This issue was escalated to the captain (I wanted to die!) and I was not surprised with the solution they came up with. They approached 42D and asked him very politely if he could just catch the next flight. He was good-natured and agreed but I couldn't help but feel a bit guilty.
Airlines all over the world should start thinking of ways to prevent these situations from happening. Tsk.
